The Dealey Garden consists of 30 raised beds on the east side of the school between the Upper and Lower Elementary wings. With the assistance of Parent Gardening Volunteer(s) in each classroom, students in Grade PreK – 3 experience the entire growing cycle twice a year as they plant, tend and harvest vegetables in the Fall and Spring semesters.
The Dealey Garden is currently run as a Community Garden where all beds are shared between the classes. The Garden Committee Chairperson(s) ensure the garden is stocked with the necessary tools, seeds and plants. They also provide Parent Gardening Volunteers with a weekly outline for what needs to be done in the garden. Parent Gardening Volunteers work with their child’s PreK/K or Lower Elementary teacher to determine a mutually convenient time to take students out to the garden each week. The time commitment for the Parent Gardening Volunteers is typically 60 – 90 minutes per gardening session. 4th and 5th Grade Students participate in gardening through a weekly Gardening Period. Mrs. Olobia oversees this class and depends on the assistance of Parent Gardening Volunteers to make gardening a great experience for the students. If you are interested in serving as a Parent Gardening Volunteer, please contact Andrea Montillo (andreamontillo@gmail.com) or Lilian Webb (lillian6@gmail.com).
